Frankland Islands Day Tour Guide

If you’re looking for a reef island experience from Cairns that feels properly off the beaten track, the Frankland Islands are worth knowing about. Unlike the more popular island day trips, the Frankland Islands are uninhabited, undeveloped, and limited to a small number of visitors each day.

The tour itself is different too. Instead of departing from Cairns harbour, you travel south by coach and join a river cruise through rainforest and mangroves before crossing to the island. This guide covers what the full day involves, what’s included, and who the experience suits best.

What Makes the Frankland Islands Different?

The Frankland Islands are a group of five continental islands sitting on the Great Barrier Reef, roughly 45 kilometres south of Cairns. The main tour destination is Normanby Island, and only one operator holds a permit to land there. That means visitor numbers are capped at around 100 per day, which is a fraction of what Green Island or Fitzroy Island see.

There are no permanent buildings, shops, restaurants, or resort facilities on the island. Everything you need for the day is provided by the tour operator and set up on the beach. The combination of strict visitor limits, pristine fringing reef, and the river-to-reef journey makes the Frankland Islands one of the more distinctive day tours available from Cairns. You can see how it compares with other island options through our island tours from Cairns page.

How Does the Day Work?

The day starts with a coach pickup from Cairns accommodation, followed by a drive south of roughly 45 minutes to the river departure point at Deeral. From there you board the boat for a river cruise down the Mulgrave River before a short open water crossing to Normanby Island.

Once on the island, you have around four to five hours to snorkel, join guided activities, explore the beach, and eat lunch. The return journey follows the same route back up the river, with afternoon tea served on the way. Coach transfers return you to Cairns in the late afternoon, with most visitors back at their accommodation by around 5:00 to 5:15 pm.

The full day runs from early morning to late afternoon, so it’s a committed day out. An express tour option is also available for visitors who prefer a later start and shorter island time.

The River Cruise

The river cruise is a unique part of this tour that you won’t find on any other Cairns reef island day trip. The boat travels down the Mulgrave River through mangrove-lined banks and tropical rainforest, with the crew providing commentary on the local environment along the way.

The cruise takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on conditions. Keep an eye on the riverbanks for estuarine crocodiles, which are regularly seen in this stretch of river. Birdlife is common too, with kingfishers, sea eagles, and other species visible from the boat. It’s a wildlife experience in its own right, not just a way of getting to the island.

From the river mouth, the open water crossing to Normanby Island is one of the shortest of any Cairns reef tour, at around 10 kilometres.

Snorkelling on the Frankland Islands

The fringing reef around Normanby Island is accessible directly from the beach in shallow, calm water. Because visitor numbers are kept low, the reef here tends to be in good condition, and the snorkelling is a highlight of the day for most visitors.

You may see a range of hard and soft corals, colourful reef fish, giant clams, and possibly green sea turtles and rays. Guided snorkel tours are included on the full-day tour and led by marine biologists who know where to find the best marine life. An adventure snorkel safari, where you snorkel from the boat back to the island, is also available on the full-day option.

All snorkel gear, stinger suits (seasonal), and flotation devices are provided. No experience is needed, and the crew give a full briefing before you enter the water. If you’re new to snorkelling, our beginner’s guide to snorkelling covers technique and what to expect.

Beach Time and Island Exploration

Normanby Island has a sandy beach, and because the tour group is small, there’s plenty of space. The operator sets up shade shelters and a lunch area on the beach, but beyond that the island is completely natural. There are no paved paths, no shops, and nowhere to buy anything.

Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available to use during the day, and a guided island walk led by a marine biologist runs after lunch. The walk covers the island’s rock pools and natural features and takes roughly 30 minutes.

The pace is relaxed. You can move between activities throughout the day or simply spend time on the beach. There’s no fixed schedule beyond the guided snorkel tours and the departure time.

What’s Included in the Tour?

The full-day Frankland Islands tour is all-inclusive. A standard package typically covers coach transfers from Cairns, the river cruise, the ocean crossing to Normanby Island, snorkel gear and stinger suits, a guided snorkel tour and adventure snorkel safari, semi-submersible reef viewing, a guided island walk, a buffet lunch on the beach, use of kayaks and paddleboards, and morning and afternoon tea.

Non-swimming options are built into the tour. The semi-submersible gives you a clear view of the reef without getting in the water, and the beach and island walk provide a full day of activity for visitors who prefer to stay dry. If you’re not confident in the water, our guide on visiting the Great Barrier Reef as a non-swimmer covers what’s available.

Who Does the Frankland Islands Tour Suit Best?

The Frankland Islands suit visitors who want a quieter, more exclusive reef island experience. Families find the calm water, guided format, and small group size work well for children. Nature lovers and photographers appreciate the low visitor numbers and pristine setting. Travellers who’ve already done Green Island or an outer reef tour and want something different will find the river cruise, uninhabited island, and uncrowded reef a welcome contrast.

It may be less suited to visitors who want a wide range of on-island facilities or structured activities beyond what the tour provides. Experienced divers looking for outer reef diversity may prefer a dedicated dive tour. And the all-inclusive pricing, while good value for what’s included, sits at the mid-range level, so it’s not the cheapest island day trip from Cairns.
